Introduction

The Centre for Water Resources which forms a part of the Institute of Science and Technology, JNT University, Hyderabad was established in the year 1984 with the funding from the then Ministry of Education and Culture, Government of India to impart training in the management of water resources at an advanced level and to undertake research and developmental activities in the field of water, land and environmental management and other related areas.  Since then the Centre has acquired a reputation among user agencies like State and Central Government Departments and other public sector and private organisations as an apex body for imparting training and undertaking field oriented research projects in water and environmental management.  In the past decade the activities of the centre has been greatly diversified and is concentrated on water and environment for sustainable development. Central Public Health and Environmental Organization has recognized this centre as one of the renowned institutes offering P.G. coerces in water and environment. The centre is funded by the World Bank under Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) and established well-equipped laboratories. Research projects were taken up in many areas of Water Resources and environment at National and International levels.

This Centre is established in the year 1984 with the following mile stones and goals.

Mile stones

When the centre was established in the 1984. it served primarily as research and training centre by taking up number of research projects and training programmes for the state and central government in-service engineers.
1989 the centre has become one of the schools of excellence namely School of Excellence for Environment and Water Resources.
In 1989 permanent faculty were recruited to the centre and external registration for Ph.D. in Water Resources was started.
In 1990 M.Tech. (Water Resources) was started.
1995 the centre has become independent from the existing School of Environment and Water Resources.
The exsisting M.Tech course was renamed and restructured into Water and Environmental Technology and it has been recognized by Central Public Health and Environmental Organization in the year 2006.

Modernization of Laboratories

The modernization of Laboratories was continuously under process of up gradation as and when the centre gets the funds from various organizations such as AICTE, DST, MoWR and UGC.
The centre used to have one PC in the year 1989 and now it has 35 Pentiums with modern softwares of water resources.
The earlier equipment which was in analog mode such as rain gauges, evaporometers and stream gauges are now fully converted in to digital mode with data transmission facility.
The centre has today fully equipped laboratories for watershed modeling remote sensing and GIS, groundwater exploration and hydrometerological station.

Courses offered and their improvisations

It was in 1990 M.Tech. (Water Resources) and in 1989 Ph.D (Water Resources) programs were offered first time in the Centre for Water Resources.
The M.Tech Course was renamed and reconstructed two times once in the year 2003 as M.Tech (Water Resources Management) and another time in the year 2006 as M.Tech (Water and Environmental Technology).
An M.Sc (Geoinformatics and Watershed Management) is renamed and restructured as M.Sc (Water and Environmental Technology).
