Under a broad policy framework of providing new technological education required for the industrial growth of the country in general and more particularly for the State of Andhra Pradesh, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University was established on 2nd October 1972, by an act of State Legislature. Rightly named after the ardent lover of Science and Technology, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, the University was established with the noble objectives of strengthening and improving the standards of Technological Education and making it relevant to the rural and industrial development of the country. On its formation, the Government Engineering Colleges at Anantapur, Kakinada and Hyderabad, along with the Government College of Fine Arts and Architecture at Hyderabad, became its Constituent Colleges. Subsequently, JNTU act 1972 was amended by JNTU (Amendment) Ordinance, 1992 to affiliate any other college or Institution notified by the A.P. State Government.

In the last thirty years, JNTU Jnas produced highly professional and competitive Engineers by infusing greater quality and content into the curriculum and educating the students with appropriate skills suitable for a rapidly changing industrial scenario. To improve the Quality of Technical Education, it has participated actively in a number of National Programmes like Teacher Quality Improvement Programme, University- industry-interaction through consultancy, Continuing Education Programmes and Expansion of Infrastructure facilities for Emerging Technologies. Distance Education programmes in B.Tech in Civil, Electrical & Electronics, Mechanical and Electronics & Communication Engineering were started by the University, in the correspondence- cum- contact mode, in 1983 and Computer Science and Engineering was added in 1995. JNT University is also offering through its College of Fine Arts and School of Architecture highly professional and job oriented courses in creative arts, architectural design and planning. University has established a number of Centres/Schools under the umbrella of the Institute of Science & Technology (IST). With many professional colleges coming up in private sector, need has arisen to improve the quality of teaching. It necessitates providing continuous refresher courses to the teachers for updating and acquiring additional skills in new areas. With that goal, University has established UGC Academic Staff College for technical teachers which has been sanctioned by UGC.

The University has been accorded the status of affiliating University since 1995. There are 422 Colleges (296 Engineering, 122 Pharmacy and 4 Architecture) affiliated to the University which are established on Self-supporting basis.

NAAC Accreditation


In the process of maintaining the quality assurance and in tune with the objective to recognise and acknowledge the value addition to technological education, the University has gone for accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in the year 2004 and has been awarded "A" grade.
